Multiply length by width to find one rectangle’s square footage, then multiply by the number of equal spaces. Add waste only when estimating materials. Measure irregular rooms as separate rectangles and combine their areas; do not include the waste-adjusted figure when reporting a home’s official floor area.

Length and width in feet produce square feet directly. The spaces multiplier applies only to equal rectangles, while the waste factor adds material overage without changing the underlying measured area.
How to measure for an accurate estimate
- Measure finished wall to finished wall at floor level, keeping the tape straight.
- Record feet and decimal feet; 6 inches equals 0.5 foot and 3 inches equals 0.25 foot.
- Split L-shaped or stepped spaces into non-overlapping rectangles and calculate each separately.
- Subtract large areas only when the material truly will not cover them, such as a fixed floor island.

Common questions
How do I calculate square footage of an irregular room?
Divide the room into rectangles, triangles, or other simple shapes. Calculate each area separately, making sure the shapes do not overlap, then add the results. For a triangular section, multiply base by height and divide by two.
Should closets count in a room’s square footage?
Include a closet when you are ordering flooring or another material that will cover its floor. Real-estate reporting rules vary by jurisdiction, so use local appraisal standards rather than this material estimate for official living-area claims.
How much waste should I add to square footage?
Five percent often covers straightforward rectangular installations. Ten percent is a common planning allowance for cuts and defects, while diagonal layouts or complex patterns can need 15% or more. Always follow the manufacturer’s installation guidance.
How many square feet are in a 12-by-12 room?
A 12-foot by 12-foot rectangle contains 144 square feet because 12 × 12 = 144. That is the measured floor area. At 10% waste, the material-planning amount becomes 158.4 square feet before carton rounding.
