What does the linear feet calculator calculate?

Linear feet measure length only, regardless of a material’s width or thickness. Multiply one run’s length in feet by the number of matching runs, then add waste. To plan stock pieces, divide the waste-adjusted length by each piece’s length and round up to a whole piece.

Repeated-run linear-foot formula

Planned linear feet = run length × number of runs × (1 + waste ÷ 100); stock pieces = round up(planned linear feet ÷ stock length).

The first multiplication combines equal one-dimensional runs without considering width or thickness. Waste covers cuts, defects, and field variation. Dividing by purchasable stock length provides a planning count, and rounding up prevents a partial final piece from being treated as purchasable.

How to measure for an accurate estimate

  1. Measure along the path the material will follow, including returns, corners, and vertical transitions that are part of the installation.
  2. Group only runs with the same measured length; calculate unequal segments separately and add their linear-foot totals.
  3. Record feet and inches consistently, converting inches to decimal feet by dividing inches by 12 before entry.
  4. For curved work, measure the centerline with a flexible tape or use verified plan dimensions instead of substituting a straight chord.

Base trim for four equal wall runs

Four wall runs are each 12 feet long. The selected trim comes in 8-foot pieces, and the project uses a 10% cutting and defect allowance.

The walls total 48 linear feet; the planned amount is 52.8 linear feet, requiring seven 8-foot pieces and purchasing 56 linear feet.

Before you purchase material

  • List every required cut before choosing stock lengths because combining short parts can reduce offcuts substantially.
  • Confirm whether the product is priced per linear foot, per piece, or per package and whether listed length is nominal or actual.
  • Add more waste for mitered corners, pattern matching, bowed stock, fragile profiles, or products that cannot reuse short offcuts.
  • Check transport limits and available store lengths; fewer long pieces can mean fewer joints but may cost more or be harder to handle.

Common questions

What is a linear foot?

A linear foot is simply 12 inches of length measured along a line. It does not include width, thickness, or area. A board, pipe, countertop edge, and piece of trim can each be one linear foot long despite having different cross-sections.

How do I convert square feet to linear feet?

You need the material’s coverage width. Divide square feet by width expressed in feet to estimate linear feet, assuming full coverage and no overlap. For example, 100 square feet divided by a 0.5-foot coverage width equals 200 linear feet before waste.

Are linear feet and lineal feet the same?

Yes. Linear foot, lineal foot, and running foot are commonly used for the same one-dimensional length measure in material sales. Always confirm the seller’s unit, because a product may instead be priced by piece, square foot, board foot, or package.

Does the stock-piece count minimize cutting waste?

No. It divides the total planned length by one stock length and rounds up, but does not arrange individual cuts. When run lengths differ, create a cut list and test how parts fit into each board, molding stick, pipe, or roll before buying.
