What does the fence material calculator calculate?

Subtract gate openings from total fence length, divide solid run by maximum post spacing, and round up to sections. Posts include section endpoints plus extra breaks at gates. Rails follow section count, while pickets use actual face width plus gap. Corners and independent runs need additional terminal posts.

Fence section, rail, and picket formulas

Sections = ceiling(solid length ÷ post spacing); rails = sections × rails per section; pickets = ceiling(solid length × 12 ÷ (width + gap) × allowance)

Gate width is removed from solid fence. Maximum spacing sets section count, rails repeat per section, and pickets repeat by actual face-width-and-gap modules.

How to measure for an accurate estimate

  1. Measure the proposed fence along the ground or layout line and mark every corner, endpoint, and elevation change.
  2. Record clear gate-opening widths separately from solid panels, including single and double gates.
  3. Use actual picket face width and the intended installed gap, not nominal lumber dimensions.
  4. Split corners and disconnected fence lines into separate runs because each run needs its own terminal posts.

  • Use gate posts, hardware, foundations, and bracing designed for the gate width, weight, wind, and use.
  • Select posts, rails, pickets, fasteners, coatings, and concrete compatible with exposure and material treatment.
  • Create an elevation plan for slopes so stepped or racked sections and special picket cuts are included.

Common questions

How far apart should fence posts be?

Spacing depends on fence material, height, wind exposure, soil, post size, rail spans, gates, and local requirements. Eight feet is common for some wood fences, but it is not universal. Follow an approved design and product instructions.

How many rails does a privacy fence need?

Rail count depends on fence height, picket material and thickness, post spacing, wind, and design. Many six-foot wood fences use three rails, but local conditions may require more or different framing. Use engineered or manufacturer details.

How do gates affect the fence post count?

Every gate creates structural endpoints that must support hinges, latches, and dynamic loads. This calculator adds a post break per gate to a continuous straight layout, but wide, double, automated, or heavy gates need individually designed posts and foundations.

Can a fence be installed on the property line?

Rules vary by jurisdiction, plat, easement, covenant, and neighbor agreement. Locate the legal boundary through appropriate records or a licensed surveyor, check setbacks and permits, and arrange utility marking before excavation. Do not rely on an existing fence.
