What is the CalcurHome calculation standard?
The CalcurHome calculation standard requires every tool to state its formula, input units, conversion factors, rounding behavior and material assumptions. Each result separates the mathematical quantity from the purchase quantity, because stores sell whole bags, boxes, bundles and stock lengths. Structural and code-dependent outputs are explicitly labeled as planning estimates.
1. Start with a recognized formula
Geometry calculators begin with established relationships for area, volume, slope, circumference and count. Trade calculators then convert the geometric result into the unit used to purchase the material. For example, a slab calculation converts cubic feet to cubic yards by dividing by 27, while a roofing calculation converts adjusted roof area into roofing squares by dividing by 100.
We prefer formulas that can be explained in a single expression and reproduced with a standard calculator. When a result depends on product coverage or material density, the default is displayed and editable when practical.
2. Keep units explicit
CalcurHome currently uses US customary measurements because the first audience is US homeowners and DIYers. Feet, inches, square feet, cubic feet, cubic yards, pounds, tons, gallons and common packaging units are never treated as interchangeable. Inputs are converted before the formula is applied, and the result names its unit next to the value.
A common source of errors is entering an inch value as feet or using diameter where a formula expects radius. Measurement guides call out those distinctions on the affected calculator page.
3. Separate net quantity from purchase quantity
Net quantity is the theoretical amount required by the measured geometry. Purchase quantity includes the selected waste allowance and rounds up to a complete selling unit. This distinction is important: 13.2 boxes cannot be purchased, and ordering exactly the theoretical volume leaves no margin for cuts, breakage, settlement or small measurement errors.
Waste defaults are planning conventions, not universal rules. Straight layouts may need less; diagonal patterns, complex roof planes, natural materials and many transitions may need more.
4. Document variable assumptions
Weight conversions for gravel, soil, mulch and similar materials depend on density. Density changes with particle size, source, compaction and moisture. Coverage for paint, grout, seed, insulation and packaged products depends on manufacturer specifications and application conditions. A calculator can provide a useful planning default only when the assumption is visible.
Supplier tickets, product labels and technical data sheets are the final source for a specific order. CalcurHome links primary references when a public trade, government or manufacturer source materially supports the calculation.
5. Review the result for reasonable bounds
Definitions are tested with a worked example and boundary inputs. A calculation should remain stable at small positive values, avoid negative quantities and round purchase counts upward. Related outputs—such as cubic yards and bag count—are checked for consistency using the same base quantity.
The visible review date records the latest formula and content check. Reviews do not replace an engineer, architect, licensed contractor, code official, survey or supplier takeoff.
