What does the deck cost calculator calculate?

Deck area is length times width. This planning estimate applies separate local rates for decking, framing, and labor to that area, adds railing by linear foot, then adds contingency. It excludes design, permits, demolition, stairs, foundations, utilities, tax, and site-specific structural work unless entered in rates.

Total = [(area × decking rate) + (area × framing rate) + (area × labor rate) + (railing length × rate)] × (1 + contingency)

Area-based work and linear railing are priced separately. Contingency is applied once to the combined subtotal, making every assumption visible and replaceable with local quotes.

How to measure for an accurate estimate

  1. Measure the proposed deck footprint independently of stairs, landings, benches, and projections.
  2. Measure open edges needing guards or railing; do not count the house wall unless the design requires railing there.
  3. Record height above grade, attachment condition, access, slope, utilities, and soil information for professional review.

Does deck square footage include stairs?

Not in this calculator. The rectangular footprint covers the main platform only. Stairs require tread, riser, stringer, landing, guard, handrail, and foundation design, so they should receive a separate material and labor allowance from approved plans.

Can this estimate be used to build a deck?

No. It is an early budget based on user-entered rates, not structural design or a permit set. A qualified designer, contractor, engineer when required, and local building department must establish the safe construction details and approvals.
