Equal-looking post spaces or a displayed table value can appear authoritative while omitting loads, connections, soil, cantilevers, attachment and local requirements.

Counting boards from square footage alone
Platform area cannot represent board direction, fixed stock lengths, end joints, breaker boards, picture frames, stairs or unusable offcuts.
Prevent it: Create a scaled surface layout and calculate every distinct field or trim group with actual product dimensions.
Combining every footing into one average
Corner, stair, interior and other footing groups may differ, while average dimensions can conceal a missing or undersized quantity line.

Using flat deck area as finish coverage
Rails, posts, stairs, edges and accessible framing add surfaces, while weathered or porous wood may not match labeled nominal coverage.

Comparing unlike quotes

Post layout arithmetic is not a structural design
The post-spacing result divides a supplied support-run length using a supplied maximum interval. It cannot establish beam capacity, end conditions, tributary loads, lateral resistance, attachment, soil or a locally acceptable layout; those inputs must come from the approved project design.
Footing volume cannot select footing dimensions
Concrete geometry supports purchasing only after count, shape and dimensions are established. Bearing, frost, uplift, reinforcement, groundwater, excavation safety and connections remain site- and design-specific.
A span-table check has defined boundaries
Displayed joist values apply only to the cited table and selected assumptions. Species, grade, moisture, loads, spacing, cantilever, bearing, connections and local amendments must all match before the table can inform a project.
Board and stain results remain product-specific
Board counts simplify layout and finish volume multiplies measured area by entered coats and coverage. Neither verifies product span, gapping, fastening, expansion, preparation, substrate condition, container availability or safe application conditions.
The deck budget uses entered local scope
Area and railing rates produce a transparent early comparison, not a bid. Design, permits, foundations, stairs, demolition, utilities, unusual loads and other items remain excluded unless the local quotes explicitly include them.
