Sketch the patio as rectangles and triangles before measuring. Mark house walls, steps, columns, drains and curved edges so the measured footprint matches the slab that will actually be placed.

Measure in one unit system

Using excavation depth as slab depth
This counts the aggregate base or other layers as concrete and can materially overstate the order.
Prevent it: Record each vertical layer on the section sketch and enter only finished concrete thickness.
Treating one irregular outline as a rectangle
Bounding-box measurements include corners, planting areas or steps that will not be poured.
Prevent it: Divide the plan into named simple shapes and preserve the section arithmetic with the estimate.
Mixing bag coverage with mixed yield
A bag’s weight does not directly state the cubic volume produced after mixing.
Prevent it: Use the manufacturer’s labeled mixed yield for the exact product and bag size.
Ordering before checking access
Concrete can arrive correctly measured but become unusable when the truck, pump, crew or forms are not ready.
