What does the gutter calculator calculate?

Add the gutter length across equal eave runs, include a cutting and lap allowance, and divide by available stock length. Downspout material equals drop count times average vertical and offset length. This calculator estimates pieces, not hydraulic capacity, outlet placement, slope, or stormwater disposal.

Gutter and downspout stock formulas

Gutter sections = ceiling(run length × runs × allowance ÷ stock length); downspout sticks = ceiling(drops × drop length ÷ stock length)

Gutters are calculated from roof-edge runs plus lap and cut allowance. Downspouts are separate vertical and offset lengths, rounded into the available stock pieces.

How to measure for an accurate estimate

  1. Measure every eave or roof edge receiving gutter and keep unequal runs as separate takeoffs.
  2. Include inside and outside corners only in their adjoining straight runs, without double-counting.
  3. Measure each downspout route through offsets and elbows to its approved discharge connection.
  4. Confirm whether the selected gutter is seamless, custom-formed, or sold in fixed stock lengths.

Two fifty-foot gutter runs

Two 50-foot eaves use 10-foot gutter sections, 10% allowance, four 12-foot downspout drops, and 10-foot downspout stock.

The order needs 110 feet of planned gutter, or 11 sections, plus 48 feet of downspout, or 5 stock pieces.

Before you purchase material

  • Size gutters and downspouts from design rainfall, contributing roof area, pitch, valley flow, and local requirements.
  • Plan outlets, end caps, corners, hangers, expansion joints, elbows, straps, guards, and sealants separately.
  • Direct water to an approved location that does not damage foundations, walks, neighboring property, or slopes.
  • Use compatible metals and coatings to reduce galvanic corrosion and premature finish failure.

Common questions

How many downspouts does a house need?

There is no universal spacing. Required outlets depend on roof area, design rainfall, gutter shape and slope, valleys, outlet capacity, and discharge constraints. A local gutter professional or drainage designer should size and locate them for the actual roof.

How much slope should a gutter have?

The appropriate slope depends on gutter system, run length, outlet locations, appearance, and manufacturer instructions. Too little can leave standing water; poor layout can also overflow. Establish high and low points during an on-site installation plan.

Does this calculator include gutter overlap?

The entered cutting and lap allowance increases total gutter footage for stock-section planning. Actual joint overlap, connectors, sealant, and expansion details depend on the product. Seamless gutters are custom-formed and should use installer measurements instead.

Where should downspouts discharge?

Water must discharge to a location allowed by local rules and site drainage design, away from vulnerable foundations and unsafe walking surfaces. Extensions, underground piping, dry wells, or storm connections may require grading analysis, permits, or utility checks.
