What does the roofing calculator calculate?

For a simple roof, multiply the overhang-adjusted horizontal footprint by the pitch slope factor. Add waste and divide by 100 to obtain roofing squares. This calculator is a planning tool for uniformly pitched rectangular roofs; hips, valleys, dormers, additions, and intersecting planes require direct measurement.

Roof area and roofing-square formula

Roof area = adjusted footprint × √(1 + (rise ÷ 12)²); roofing squares = roof area × (1 + waste ÷ 100) ÷ 100

The Pythagorean slope factor expands horizontal plan area to sloped area for one uniform pitch. One roofing square equals 100 square feet of roof surface.

How to measure for an accurate estimate

  1. Use building dimensions at the exterior walls and add the horizontal roof overhang on both ends.
  2. Confirm pitch as inches of rise for every 12 inches of horizontal run, not along the rafter.
  3. Separate additions, porches, dormers, and other roof sections when dimensions or pitches differ.
  4. Use construction drawings or professional remote measurement instead of climbing onto a roof.

Common questions

What is a roofing square?

One roofing square is a trade unit equal to 100 square feet of roof surface, not a 100-foot length. Material packaging varies, so convert roof area to squares first and then apply the selected manufacturer’s bundles or panels per square.

Does roof pitch increase roofing area?

Yes. A steeper roof travels farther along the slope than its horizontal footprint suggests. The slope factor converts plan area to surface area. It does not account for complex intersections, so separate planes should be measured on cut-up roofs.

How much roofing waste should I include?

A simple gable roof may use roughly 10% to 15%, while hips, valleys, dormers, steep roofs, and directional products can require more. Use the roofer’s cut plan and manufacturer instructions rather than treating one allowance as universal.

Can I safely measure a roof myself?

Avoid walking on a roof. Falls, fragile decking, electricity, heat, moisture, and steep slopes create severe hazards. Use permit drawings, ground measurements for a simple structure, aerial measurement, or a qualified insured roofing professional.
