What does the metal roofing calculator calculate?

Divide each roof plane’s eave length by the panel’s effective coverage width and round up, then multiply by equal planes. Add a whole-panel allowance for damage and difficult cuts. Total panel length equals ordered panels times slope length; trim, clips, fasteners, and flashing remain separate.

Panels = ceiling(ceiling(eave length × 12 ÷ effective panel width) × equal planes × allowance)

Each plane rounds independently because a partial final coverage width still requires a full panel. Effective width reflects the installed side lap; allowance adds whole replacement or cut panels.

How to measure for an accurate estimate

  1. Measure eave width and slope length on every roof plane from drawings or professional measurement.
  2. Use effective installed coverage width, which is narrower than overall panel width when side laps overlap.
  3. Group planes only when eave width, slope length, panel orientation, and termination details are identical.
  4. Record valleys, hips, transitions, penetrations, curbs, and tapered areas for a fabricator’s separate cut plan.

Each plane needs 38 panels; 76 base panels become 80 ordered panels totaling about 1,432 linear feet.

  • Use compatible clips, fasteners, sealants, underlayment, closures, and trim from the approved assembly.
  • Protect panels during delivery and storage to prevent bending, abrasion, wet-stack corrosion, and coating damage.
  • Have attachment, wind uplift, thermal movement, condensation control, and dissimilar-metal contact professionally reviewed.

Common questions

What is effective metal panel coverage width?

Effective coverage is the roof width one installed panel actually covers after side laps or seam engagement. It may be smaller than the panel’s physical width. Use the manufacturer’s system value, not a measurement across an uninstalled sheet.

Can metal roof panels be joined along the slope?

Some systems permit end laps under specific details, while others are designed as continuous panels from eave to ridge. Long panels also face shipping and handling limits. The manufacturer and contractor must approve panel length and any end-lap assembly.

How much extra metal roofing should I order?

Simple rectangular planes may need only a few spare panels, while valleys, hips, angles, penetrations, and damage risk require more. Because panels are directional and custom length, prepare a plane-by-plane cut list before selecting an allowance.

Does this calculator include metal roofing trim?

No. Eave, rake, ridge, valley, transition, wall, penetration, closure, and ventilation components are linear or assembly-specific items. A system supplier should build the trim and accessory schedule from detailed roof drawings and local requirements.
