Choose a site before finalizing dimensions
Record daily sun pattern, drainage after rain, existing soil condition, nearby trees, utilities, water access, slopes and likely animal pressure. Check whether beds block required access or collect runoff from treated roofs, pavement or neighboring land. A convenient rectangle on paper may be difficult to reach, irrigate or drain on the site.
Record: Site sketch, seasonal sun notes, drainage observation, utilities, water source and access constraints.
Measure outside and inside geometry
Draw wall thickness, corner posts, bracing and internal dividers, then measure the clear soil cavity. Record bed height separately from intended settled fill depth and leave any watering lip unfilled. Calculate beds independently when dimensions differ instead of applying the count field to unmatched boxes.
Record: Outside footprint, clear inside length and width, wall details, fill depth and bed count by size.
Specify the growing medium
Write the supplier or recipe, ingredient proportions, screening, compost maturity, test information and intended crops before ordering. Do not assume products labeled topsoil, garden soil or raised-bed mix are interchangeable. Existing site soil, drainage and nutrient status affect whether an imported blend is appropriate.
Record: Product name, ingredients, test or supplier information, crop use, bulk density notes and delivered unit.
Create a crop and plant map
Divide each bed into named crop blocks or perennial layers. Use mature spacing, succession timing, trellis footprint and access needs rather than nursery container width. Where several species share a bed, assign coverage percentages that total no more than the available planted area so independent calculator runs do not overlap.
Record: Crop or species, mature spacing, planting dates, coverage share, supports and harvest-access notes.
Measure irrigation as an operating system
Group beds with similar needs into zones where practical, then measure whole-zone flow or sum verified emitter flow. Record pressure regulation, filtration and emitter spacing. Choose a starting target from crop, growth stage, weather and growing medium, and observe moisture below the surface instead of watering only by the calendar.
Record: Zone map, measured flow, emitter layout, target depth, runtime, cycles and adjustment method.
Separate soil, compost top-ups and mulch
The initial fill establishes root-zone volume; later compost additions and surface mulch have different purposes and depths. Measure each as its own layer. Keep mulch away from stems or crowns where appropriate, and do not use a thick surface layer to conceal that the bed was underfilled or settled unevenly.
Record: Initial fill, amendment and mulch quantities with material, area, depth and application date.
Plan delivery, movement and verification
Confirm truck access, pile location, minimum order, selling unit and how material will move from delivery to beds without compacting wet soil or blocking drainage. Measure the filled depth after initial settling and preserve unopened-bag or bulk-ticket records. Update remaining quantities before ordering a second load.
Record: Supplier quote, load size, staging location, movement plan, delivery ticket and post-fill measurements.

- Mulch, future compost and initial soil fill remain separate quantities.
- Bed structure, soil load, drainage and food-growing suitability have been checked appropriately.
- Delivery, staging and material movement can occur without blocking drainage or damaging the site.
Catch mistakes before they become purchases.
Measuring outside wall dimensions
Thick boards, block, posts and internal braces reduce the clear soil cavity, so outside geometry can overstate both volume and plantable area.
Prevent it: Use finished inside length and width for soil and planting calculations, preserving outside dimensions only for site layout.
Filling to nominal wall height
A bed filled to the very top may lack a watering lip, while deep existing material, dividers or a sloped base can change actual soil volume.
Prevent it: Measure the intended settled fill surface from the prepared base and document any known displacement separately.
Buying an undefined soil blend
A correct cubic-yard quantity can still have unsuitable texture, immature compost, excessive salts, poor drainage or unknown ingredients.
Prevent it: Obtain product composition and relevant test or supplier context, then match the mix to crops and site conditions before delivery.
Adding separate plant counts across the whole bed
Running every crop at 100 percent coverage counts the same square feet repeatedly and creates an overcrowded order.
Prevent it: Map crop blocks first and assign each calculator run only its actual share of plantable area.
Using controller minutes from a generic schedule
The same minutes deliver different water when flow, emitter count, pressure, bed area or system condition changes.
Prevent it: Measure zone flow, inspect delivery, observe root-zone moisture and adjust the calculated starting time to current conditions.
What the calculator sequence cannot decide.

Volume does not validate a growing medium
The raised-bed formula reliably converts inside geometry to cubic feet, yards and bags, but it cannot determine crop-appropriate depth, blend quality, drainage, nutrient balance, contamination or settlement for a specific product.
Spacing arithmetic is not a planting design
A grid count cannot select compatible species, succession, trellising, mature habit or ecological suitability. Use crop-specific or regional plant guidance to create the map, then calculate each assigned area.
Runtime is an adjustable starting point
Measured flow and area support a transparent runtime estimate, but weather, crop stage, soil moisture, emitter condition and runoff determine the final schedule. Inspect the bed rather than treating calculated minutes as permanent.
Mulch quantity does not choose placement
Bag count follows area, depth and labeled volume. Plant crowns, stems, seedlings, pests, disease conditions and the selected material determine where mulch belongs and where clear space is safer.
