A sheet can have enough area but still be too short in one direction to cross the deepest contour and reach the opposite edge.

Measuring only the visible water surface
Surface length and width omit travel down and up the pond sides as well as the material needed beyond each finished edge.
Prevent it: Measure maximum depth from the water-edge plane and include twice that depth plus verified overlap in both dimensions.
Choosing overlap after excavation
An arbitrary edge allowance may not suit the liner system, anchoring detail, slope, coping or overflow condition.
Prevent it: Select the complete liner and edge system first and preserve the manufacturer's current overlap basis with the estimate.
Converting liner area directly into rock
Underwater, coping, path and planting stones have different locations, depths, sizes, support needs and supplier densities.
Prevent it: Draw and calculate each approved decorative or protective stone zone separately from the liner envelope.
Trimming before the system is observed
Settlement, folds, water level or an edge adjustment can consume material that appeared to be excess during dry installation.
Prevent it: Follow the selected system's installation sequence and complete required fill or edge observations before irreversible trimming.

The rectangular formula simplifies a three-dimensional surface
Maximum length and width plus twice the maximum depth and overlap create a conservative purchasing envelope for many simple ponds. Shelves, streams, islands, steep transitions, penetrations and complex contours can require field measurements, additional material or manufacturer review.
Liner-only cost omits the complete pond system
An entered square-foot price estimates only the calculated liner sheet. Underlayment, seams, penetration boots, pumps, plumbing, filtration, electrical work, excavation, edging, delivery, labor and maintenance remain separate scope.
Rock tonnage depends on real product density
Area and depth create a geometric volume, but weight depends on stone type, size, moisture and supplier bulk density. A decorative-rock result does not verify slope stability, liner protection or whether a heavy edge detail is suitable.
Mulch belongs outside the water-management assembly
Bed area and finished depth estimate dry landscape mulch. The result cannot establish safe setbacks from liner edges, overflow, equipment, structures or ignition-sensitive areas, and it should not be used as pond substrate.
