What does the decorative rock calculator calculate?

Multiply known bed area by depth to get volume, add placement waste, and apply bulk density for tons. Unlike the length-and-width stone tools, this calculator accepts total square footage and reports coverage per ton, making it useful after measuring several irregular landscape beds together.

Landscape stone coverage formula

Order yd³ = area × depth ÷ 12 ÷ 27 × waste factor; tons = order yd³ × density; ft²/ton = 27 ÷ density ÷ depth in feet.

Area-based input suits a combined takeoff from a plan or mapping tool. The coverage-per-ton line reverses the volume and density relationship at the selected uniform depth.

How to measure for an accurate estimate

  1. Add all bed square footage that will receive the same stone size and installed depth.
  2. Subtract large unfilled features such as patios, ponds, equipment pads, and dense groundcover.
  3. Measure depth relative to the prepared base, not the top of loose existing debris.
  4. Get the supplier’s bulk density for the selected rock size and moisture condition.

Net volume is 3.86 yd³; order 4.24 yd³, or about 5.94 tons. One ton theoretically covers 92.6 sq ft.

  • Keep product lots consistent across connected visible beds whenever possible.
  • Check whether delivery is priced per load, per ton, or by distance before comparing products.
  • Include durable edging and base preparation in the plan, not only decorative stone.

Common questions

How many square feet does one ton of landscape rock cover?

Coverage depends on bulk density and depth. At 1.4 tons per cubic yard, one ton theoretically covers about 139 square feet at 2 inches, 93 square feet at 3 inches, or 69 square feet at 4 inches before waste.

What depth should I use for decorative landscape rock?

Select depth based on particle size, visibility of the base, foot traffic, drainage, and edge height. Larger rock generally needs greater depth to look continuous. Place a sample section and measure it before committing to a whole-site order.

Why is landscape rock sold by both yard and ton?

A loader bucket measures approximate volume, while a truck scale measures weight. Suppliers choose systems based on their operation. The conversion depends on product bulk density and moisture, so use the seller’s exact relationship instead of treating every yard as the same tonnage.

Can I place decorative rock directly over soil?

It can mix into soft soil, settle unevenly, or migrate without preparation. The appropriate base and separator depend on soil, drainage, slope, plants, and use. A fabric may separate materials but does not correct unstable grade or create a drainage outlet.
