What does the river rock calculator calculate?

River rock quantity comes from the bed’s three-dimensional volume, plus allowance for irregular edges and placement. The default 1.45 tons per cubic yard is only a planning density. Larger rounded rock leaves different voids than small stone, so confirm both density and package coverage with the seller.

02

River rock volume, weight and bags

Order ft³ = length × average width × depth ÷ 12 × allowance; yd³ = ft³ ÷ 27; tons = yd³ × density; bags = round up(ft³ ÷ bag size).

Average width approximates an irregular bed. The allowance covers curves and pockets, then one computed volume is translated into the three purchasing units.

03

How to measure for an accurate estimate

  1. Measure a winding bed in short stations and average several widths rather than using the widest point.
  2. Use average rock depth; calculate intentionally deeper pools or channels as separate sections.
  3. Measure inside edging and subtract large boulders, pads, or structures that displace rock.
  4. Enter the package’s stated cubic-foot volume or the supplier’s bulk density for the selected size.
04

Decorative dry creek strip

A 25 ft by 4 ft average bed is 3 in deep with 12% allowance, 1.45 tons/yd³, and 0.5-ft³ bags.

The order volume is 28 ft³, equal to 1.04 yd³, approximately 1.50 tons, or 56 bags.

Before you purchase material

  • View a wet and dry sample because river rock color changes significantly with moisture.
  • Use larger allowances for hand-set creek beds where individual stones create uneven pockets.
  • Check delivery access and where a heavy bulk pile can be placed without damaging pavement.
  • Choose a size distribution appropriate for water flow; the calculator supplies quantity, not hydraulic design.

Common questions

How deep should landscape river rock be?

Depth should relate to rock size, edge height, use, and the prepared base. A shallow decorative cover may expose fabric or soil as stones move, while an unnecessarily deep layer adds cost and weight. Test a small area with the chosen stone.

How many tons of river rock are in a cubic yard?

This calculator defaults to 1.45 tons per cubic yard, but that is not universal. Rock mineral, particle-size distribution, voids, and moisture change bulk weight. Ask the supplier for a product-specific tons-per-yard conversion, especially when purchasing by scale weight.

Can river rock improve yard drainage?

Rock can protect soil and form part of a drainage feature, but adding stone alone does not establish a safe outlet or correct grading. Dry wells, swales, and creek beds require capacity and erosion review. Consult local requirements before redirecting runoff.

Should I buy bagged or bulk river rock?

Bags are convenient for small areas, color matching, and limited access. Bulk is often more practical for larger volumes, but delivery fees and minimums matter. Compare total delivered cost using the calculated yards and bags, then inspect both products for consistency.
