Add twice the maximum pond depth and twice the edge overlap to both maximum surface dimensions. Multiplying the resulting liner length and width gives rectangular sheet area, while an optional price per square foot estimates liner-only cost. The method suits irregular ponds when maximum measurements include every curve.

Liner length = maximum pond length + 2 × maximum depth + 2 × edge overlap. Liner width = maximum pond width + 2 × maximum depth + 2 × edge overlap. Sheet area = liner length × liner width.

Twice the maximum depth allows the liner to travel down one side and up the opposite side in either direction. Twice the selected overlap extends beyond both opposing edges. Multiplying the resulting rectangular dimensions gives purchasing area; optional cost multiplies that area by the entered liner-only square-foot price.

How to measure for an accurate estimate

  1. Mark the completed top outline, then measure maximum length and maximum perpendicular width enclosing every irregular curve.
  2. Measure the deepest vertical point from the intended finished water-edge plane and include shelves within the maximum footprint.

Common questions

Can this calculator size liner for an irregular pond?

Yes, when maximum length and width form a rectangle enclosing every curve and maximum depth captures the deepest point. This creates a conservative rectangular sheet estimate. Complex shelves, streams, islands, steep transitions, or penetrations may require field measurements and manufacturer review.

Why is pond depth added twice?

The liner must travel from one top edge down to the deepest point and back up to the opposite edge. Adding twice the maximum depth to both plan dimensions provides that basic travel allowance, although complex contours can consume additional material.

How much overlap should a pond liner have?

Use the overlap required by the selected liner system, edge treatment, anchoring method, and manufacturer instructions. The calculator does not prescribe a universal value. Enter overlap at one edge; the formula doubles it so both opposing edges receive the selected amount.

Does the pond liner estimate include underlayment?
