Multiply total eave length by horizontal overhang depth to find soffit area, then apply waste and divide vented and solid shares by the selected panel’s net coverage. This calculator also estimates packages and two continuous channel or trim runs, but it does not determine code-required attic ventilation.
Soffit panel, package and trim formulas
Dividing overhang depth by twelve converts inches to feet before multiplying by total eave length. The allowance is applied to area, which is split into user-selected vented and solid shares. Each share rounds independently because those products are purchased separately. Trim assumes one continuous wall-side and one fascia-side run.
How to measure for an accurate estimate
- Measure horizontal soffit depth rather than the sloped rafter length, and record eaves with different depths as separate takeoffs.
- Add only eave runs receiving the same product, color, panel orientation, and vented-share layout.
- Read actual net installed square-foot coverage per panel or piece from the selected product literature or package.
- Measure cross-ends, returns, rakes, inside and outside corners, transitions, and unusual trim profiles separately.
Two long eaves with a two-foot overhang
A home has 80 total feet of eave, a 24-inch horizontal overhang, panels covering 12 square feet each, 10 panels per package, a 50% vented share, and a 10% allowance.
The soffit covers 160 square feet and the purchase area is 176 square feet. The split requires eight vented and eight solid panel units, two separate packages, and 176 linear feet for two long trim runs with allowance.Before you purchase material
- Confirm whether vented and solid products share the same installed coverage, package count, profile, color, and fastening method.
- Purchase compatible channels, fascia transitions, fasteners, corner accessories, and expansion details specified by the manufacturer.
- Keep attic ventilation design separate from panel appearance; verify approved NFVA, intake and exhaust balance, and unobstructed airflow.
- Increase allowance for short returns, many corners, damaged pieces, color matching, difficult access, or layouts with limited offcut reuse.
Common questions
Does soffit square footage equal roof overhang area?
Only for the horizontal eave strips you measure. Rake soffits, boxed returns, porches, offsets, and changing overhang depths need separate geometry. Measure from the wall-side finish to the fascia-side finish instead of using sloped rafter length or roof-plan area.
How do I find net coverage per soffit panel?
Use the manufacturer’s installed coverage for one purchasable panel or piece. Do not multiply nominal width and length when laps, locks, or cuts reduce coverage. Confirm whether a carton label reports coverage for the full carton or for each individual panel.
Does the vented share satisfy attic ventilation requirements?
No. It divides material area only. Required net-free ventilation depends on the approved ratio, vent ratings, intake and exhaust distribution, assembly design, local requirements, and clear airflow above insulation. Use the dedicated attic ventilation calculator with project-approved inputs.
What trim is included in the soffit estimate?
The trim result allows for two continuous long edges along the entered eave length. It does not count end closures, corners, returns, rakes, seams, transitions, fascia cover, or unique manufacturer accessories. Create a profile-by-profile linear takeoff before ordering.
