What does the attic ventilation calculator calculate?

Enter attic floor area and the ratio denominator approved for the project; the calculator never chooses a ratio automatically. It converts square feet to square inches of total NFVA, applies your intake share, and rounds labeled intake and exhaust product ratings up to whole vent quantities.

Attic NFVA and whole-vent formulas

Total NFVA (in²) = attic area (ft²) × 144 ÷ approved ratio denominator. Intake NFVA = total × intake share. Exhaust NFVA = total − intake. Vent units = ceiling(required share ÷ labeled NFA per unit).

Multiplying attic floor area by 144 converts square feet into square inches before applying the entered ratio denominator. The selected intake percentage divides the total requirement, while exhaust receives the remainder. Dividing each share by its product’s labeled net-free area and rounding up gives whole pieces or rated linear units.

How to measure for an accurate estimate

  1. Measure the floor area of each separately vented attic or enclosed rafter space rather than using roof-surface area.
  2. Obtain the ratio denominator and intake-exhaust distribution approved for the exact assembly under the locally adopted requirements.
  3. Read net-free area per piece or per linear foot from the selected intake and exhaust product documentation.
  4. Inspect whether insulation, framing, baffles, paint, screens, or debris reduce or block the intended continuous air path.

Approved attic ratio with balanced intake and exhaust

A separately vented attic has 1,200 square feet of floor area. The project-approved denominator is 300, intake is 50%, intake units provide 9 square inches NFA, and exhaust units provide 18 square inches NFA.

Total required NFVA is 576 square inches, divided into 288 square inches each for intake and exhaust. Rounding each product independently requires 32 intake units and 16 exhaust units.

Before you purchase material

  • Compare products by labeled net-free area and approved use, not gross opening dimensions or grille face area.
  • Keep intake and exhaust units separate when product ratings use different bases, such as each piece versus each linear foot.
  • Follow manufacturer instructions for substrate, fasteners, underlayment integration, weather protection, spacing, and compatible roof materials.
  • Have the ratio, vent locations, vapor-control conditions, fire and wind requirements, and unvented-assembly alternatives reviewed for the property.

Common questions

Why is the attic ventilation ratio blank by default?

Ratio eligibility depends on the adopted code, local amendments, assembly, vapor control, vent placement, and other project conditions. The calculator therefore requires an approved denominator instead of assuming one. Obtain that input from the governing requirements or a qualified project professional.

What does net-free ventilation area mean?

NFVA is the effective open area available for airflow after louvers, screens, and other restrictions are considered. It can be much smaller than gross vent dimensions. Use the selected product’s labeled NFA per piece or rated linear foot for quantity conversion.

Should intake and exhaust vents have equal quantities?

Not necessarily. The approved NFVA split may be balanced, but different products often provide different net-free area per unit. Compare required square inches on each side, then divide by each product’s rating. Whole piece counts can differ while their airflow areas remain balanced.

Can I use roof area instead of attic floor area?

Use the area of the vented attic or enclosed rafter space defined by the applicable requirement, commonly measured at the floor or ceiling plane, rather than sloped roof covering area. Calculate separately isolated spaces independently and confirm property-specific interpretation before ordering vents.
