Verify water volume from more than a label
Measure at the waterline rather than outside coping and record shallow and deep water depths. Divide freeform pools, shelves, spas or large benches into sensible sections where possible. Compare the dimensional estimate with construction plans, a fill meter, documented delivery or a previously validated equipment record before using gallons for treatment or equipment decisions.

Define the operating objective and constraints

Keep water quality on its own verified schedule
Test disinfectant and pH using appropriate methods and follow pool-equipment and chemical-product directions. If salt is adjusted, independently test current salinity, add only a staged amount compatible with the manufacturer procedure, circulate as directed and retest before adding more. Circulation time does not replace water testing or treatment.

Set maintenance and recheck triggers

Estimating volume from nominal pool size
Coping dimensions, freeboard, coves, benches, steps and irregular depth can make a marketed pool size materially different from usable water volume.

Converting target GPM into horsepower

Adding the full salt estimate at once
Volume error, test error, residual salt or product assumptions can produce oversalting, which usually cannot be corrected by simply removing salt.
