What does the pool pump turnover calculator calculate?

Pool pump turnover flow equals pool volume multiplied by desired turnovers, divided by daily runtime. Convert gallons per hour to gallons per minute by dividing by 60. Energy cost comes from entered pump watts, runtime, and electricity rate. This sizing result does not determine pump horsepower or prove hydraulic compatibility.

Pool turnover flow and electricity cost formulas

Target GPH = pool gallons × turnovers ÷ runtime hours; target GPM = target GPH ÷ 60. Daily kWh = entered watts ÷ 1,000 × runtime hours; monthly cost = daily kWh × electricity rate × 30.4.

The turnover calculation spreads the selected daily water volume evenly across the hours the pump runs. Dividing hourly flow by 60 produces gallons per minute. The separate energy calculation converts entered electrical watts to kilowatts, multiplies by runtime, and applies the entered utility rate; it does not infer motor horsepower.

How to measure for an accurate estimate

  1. Calculate pool volume from measured dimensions and average depth, or use a reliable fill-meter value when available.
  2. Enter the turnover target and daily runtime required by the pool’s operating plan, equipment instructions, and applicable local rules.
  3. Use measured running watts at the intended speed when possible; otherwise use manufacturer data for that exact pump and operating point.
  4. Read the all-in electricity price per kilowatt-hour from a recent bill, including applicable supply and delivery charges.

Common questions

What does one pool turnover mean?

One turnover means moving a water volume equal to the pool’s estimated capacity through the circulation system. It does not mean every water molecule passed through the filter, and it does not independently establish adequate sanitation, mixing, filtration, or required runtime.

Does this calculator choose pool pump horsepower?

No. It intentionally reports a target average flow without guessing horsepower. Pump selection requires the system’s total dynamic head, pipe and fitting losses, filter and heater limits, pump performance curves, electrical conditions, and operating speeds. A qualified professional should verify those factors.

Why might actual pool flow differ from calculated GPM?

The result is volume divided by time, while actual flow depends on pump speed and the resistance of pipes, valves, fittings, filters, heaters, sanitizers, and water features. Dirty filters, changing valve positions, or inaccurate volume estimates can also shift measured GPM.

How is monthly pool pump cost estimated?

The calculator multiplies entered watts by daily runtime, converts watt-hours to kilowatt-hours, applies your electricity rate, and uses 30.4 days for a monthly average. Variable-speed schedules need separate calculations by speed because watts can differ greatly across operating settings.
