What does the pool salt calculator calculate?

To raise salinity, multiply pool-water mass by the desired ppm increase, then divide by one million and by the salt product’s purity. Add nothing when the tested level already meets or exceeds target. Confirm volume, current salinity, target range, product label, and staged-addition procedure with the chlorinator manufacturer before dosing.

Pool salt ppm formula

Salt product (lb) = gallons × 8.345404 lb/gal × max(target ppm − current ppm, 0) ÷ 1,000,000 ÷ (purity % ÷ 100).

Parts per million is treated as a mass ratio: one part salt per one million parts pool water. Gallons are converted to approximate water mass, only a positive ppm difference is used, and dividing by product purity adjusts the pure-salt requirement to labeled product weight.

How to measure for an accurate estimate

  1. Verify pool gallons from plans, metered fill, or a carefully measured volume calculation before estimating salt.
  2. Test a representative water sample with a salt-specific strip, drop test, or calibrated meter suitable for the expected range.
  3. Enter the target range stated by the exact chlorinator manufacturer; 3,200 ppm is only a starting default.
  4. Read sodium-chloride purity and bag weight from the product label rather than assuming every pool-salt product is identical.

Raising a 15,000-gallon pool by 2,200 ppm

A verified 15,000-gallon pool tests at 1,000 ppm, the chlorinator target is 3,200 ppm, and the selected 40 lb salt is labeled 99% pure.

The 2,200 ppm increase requires 275.4 lb of pure salt, or about 278.2 lb of 99%-pure product; seven bags are enough to purchase, not a direction to add all seven.

Before you purchase material

  • Buy only salt approved by the chlorinator and pool-surface manufacturers, following their purity and additive restrictions.
  • Round bag count up for purchasing, but measure and add only the staged amount supported by current test results.
  • Distribute and circulate salt exactly as the equipment manual directs, keeping undissolved product away from sensitive surfaces.
  • Store unopened bags dry and secure, and avoid mixing or handling pool products contrary to their labels.

Common questions

How many pounds of salt raise 10,000 gallons by 1,000 ppm?

The mass formula gives about 83.5 lb of pure salt. At 99% product purity, that becomes roughly 84.3 lb of product. Verify volume and salinity, then follow the chlorinator manual’s staged-addition and retesting procedure.

What salt ppm should I target for my pool?

Use the operating range and target published for the exact salt chlorine generator, not a universal number. The 3,200 ppm default is editable. Confirm current salinity independently because displays, test methods, temperature, and calibration can disagree.

Why should I add pool salt in stages?

Salt is difficult to remove without replacing water, while volume and test results both have uncertainty. Staged additions with circulation and retesting reduce overshooting risk. Follow the product label and equipment manual for distribution, timing, and startup instructions.

What if my current salt level is above the target?

This calculator returns zero because adding salt cannot lower salinity. Recheck with a suitable independent test, confirm the equipment range, and contact the manufacturer or a qualified pool professional about corrective steps, water restrictions, and safe discharge requirements.
