What does the retaining wall cost calculator calculate?

Multiply wall length by average exposed height for face area, apply the entered installed wall rate, then price drainage and excavation by wall length. Add fixed engineering or permit costs and contingency. This is budgeting, not stability design; embedment, soil, groundwater, surcharge, reinforcement, slopes, utilities, access, and wall system can change scope.

Total = [length × height × wall rate + length × (drainage rate + excavation rate) + fixed fees] × contingency factor

The visible wall system is priced by face area while linear drainage and excavation remain tied to wall length. Project-level design and permit fees are added once, preventing unlike units from being combined into an opaque per-square-foot assumption.

How to measure for an accurate estimate

  1. Survey wall alignment and record exposed and total retained heights at regular stations, corners, steps, and grade changes.
  2. Document slopes above and below, driveways, structures, fences, utilities, property lines, groundwater, and concentrated drainage.
  3. Measure access width, haul distance, excavation limits, disposal route, and working room because these can control construction cost.

Common questions

Is retaining wall cost based only on face area?

No. Face area is convenient for comparing a defined wall system, but excavation, embedment, base, drainage, reinforcement length, reinforced-soil volume, access, disposal, corners, steps, finishes, engineering, and restoration may not scale with visible area. Keep those components explicit in written proposals.

Does exposed height equal total retained height?

Not always. Buried units, grade differences, slopes, or a footing can make construction and retained height greater than the visible face. Permit and engineering rules may use definitions different from this field. Have the actual wall section and grades established by qualified local professionals.

Why is drainage priced separately?

Water pressure and erosion are critical wall concerns, while drainage scope varies with soil, groundwater, surface runoff, wall system, outlets, and local design. Separating it prevents a low wall rate from appearing complete when drain pipe, aggregate, filter fabric, outlets, or grading are excluded.

When does a retaining wall need engineering?

There is no universal height threshold. Jurisdictions may consider retained height, total wall height, slopes, surcharge, seismic conditions, property lines, utilities, occupancy, and consequences of failure. Ask the local authority and a qualified designer before relying on a material takeoff or budget.
