Interior Paint Cost Calculator — Room Walls
Build a transparent planning estimate for one room’s walls from measured perimeter and height. The result keeps whole-gallon material cost, a complete-scope local labor rate, and a separate preparation allowance visible instead of hiding them inside a national average.

Interior painting cost starts with net wall area: room perimeter times wall height minus unpainted openings. Multiply by coats and waste to estimate whole gallons from labeled coverage. The budget then applies your local paint price, complete-scope labor rate, and preparation allowance; quantity-only paint and exterior-project costs remain separate.
Interior wall paint quantity and local cost
Perimeter and wall height create gross wall area, while measured unpainted openings are deducted once. Coats and application allowance affect finish-material quantity, which rounds to whole gallons before the local paint price is applied. Labor uses net wall area at the complete-scope rate entered, and preparation remains a separate fixed allowance so users can see exactly which local assumptions drive the budget.
How to measure for an accurate estimate
- Add the finished length of every wall included, then measure wall height; calculate rooms or height changes separately when their scopes differ.
- Measure genuinely unpainted door and window openings in square feet, and do not subtract surfaces such as painted doors, reveals, or trim.
- List wall repairs, stain blocking, primer, color changes, trim, ceilings, closets, accent walls, and furniture protection before requesting comparable quotes.
- Read coverage from the exact coating label and identify whether the labor rate covers all entered coats, setup, protection, cleanup, and disposal.
Two coats on a medium bedroom
A room has 52 linear feet of wall perimeter and an 8-foot average wall height. Measured unpainted openings total 51 square feet, leaving 365 square feet of net walls. The plan uses two finish coats, 350 square feet per gallon, 10% application allowance, paint at $55 per gallon, a complete-scope labor quote of $1.50 per square foot, and a $250 preparation allowance.
The coating calculation requires 2.29 gallons and rounds to three. Paint costs $165, labor costs $547.50, and preparation adds $250, producing a $962.50 planning total for the complete entered scope. Before you purchase material
- Enter current local prices for the specified brand, product line, color base, sheen, container size, and coat scope rather than a national average.
- Compare written proposals line by line for preparation, primer, coats, application method, repairs, room protection, cleanup, schedule, and exclusions.
- Calculate different colors, primers, wall finishes, trim enamels, and ceiling coatings separately because their coverage, price, and labor can differ.
- For paint disturbance in covered pre-1978 properties, review applicable lead-safe requirements and include qualified containment, cleaning, and documentation in the quote.
Common questions
How is this different from the regular paint calculator?
The regular paint calculator focuses on gallons for walls and an optional ceiling. This page prices room walls using your local paint price, complete-scope labor rate, and preparation allowance. Use separate calculations for ceilings, trim, primer, or colors with different products and rates.
Should painting labor be priced per coat-square-foot?
Only if the written quote defines that convention. This calculator treats the entered labor rate as the complete price per net wall square foot for all entered coats. If a contractor prices each coat, convert the proposal to the same complete-scope basis before entering it.
What belongs in the preparation allowance?
Include only costs not already inside the labor rate or paint price, such as patching, sanding, masking, stain blocking, primer, supplies, furniture protection, specialty access, or fixed mobilization. Keep exclusions documented so the same task is not priced twice.
Does this estimate include exterior painting or lead-safe work?
No. Exterior access, weather exposure, washing, scraping, siding repairs, and exterior coatings belong in the separate exterior cost tool. Lead-safe work is included only when a qualified local quote explicitly covers required testing, containment, cleaning, verification, and documentation for the property.

A room-paint estimate is more than floor dimensions multiplied by a rule of thumb. Wall height, openings, ceiling area, coat count, surface condition, color change and product coverage all affect gallons. This guide keeps those inputs visible and separates finishes that should not be combined.
