How to measure for an accurate estimate
- Measure each wall rectangle and gable, subtract only large unpainted openings, and calculate trim or accent surfaces separately.
- Inspect siding, stucco, masonry, fascia, soffits, eaves, doors, and trim to define preparation and repair scope before pricing.
- Use coverage from the selected product and substrate conditions; rough, porous, sprayed, or heavily repaired surfaces may cover differently.

Common questions
How do I calculate exterior paintable area?
Break elevations into rectangles and triangles, add their areas, and subtract only substantial openings that will not consume paint around their edges. Measure fascia, soffits, doors, trim, railings, and accent materials separately because their coating, access, and labor rates can differ.
Why does paint coverage vary outside?
Texture, porosity, previous coating, color change, weathering, application method, film thickness, and overspray affect actual spread. The label provides a planning range under stated conditions. Use the lower realistic coverage for rough surfaces and keep unopened surplus returnable when permitted.
Is preparation included in exterior painting cost?
Only when the entered prep rate or contractor proposal includes it. Washing, scraping, sanding, caulking, spot priming, rot repair, masking, containment, and access can dominate labor. Require every quote to state surface condition assumptions and preparation steps rather than saying only “paint house.”
Does this calculator cover lead-safe work?
It does not determine whether lead is present or price compliance automatically. Work disturbing paint in pre-1978 housing may trigger federal or authorized-state requirements.
