Photograph and draw every elevation
Create one named elevation for each side and addition. Mark wall rectangles, gables, corners, material transitions, windows, doors, penetrations, decks, roof intersections, gutters, downspouts and grade clearances. Photograph stains, failed sealant, peeling coatings, loose cladding, damaged trim and visible water paths. Painting and cladding bids can look comparable while assuming completely different existing conditions, preparation levels and repair quantities.

Measure access and protection separately
Document stories, roof slopes, setbacks, overhead lines, landscaping, adjacent property, decks, pools, fragile paving and space for lifts, scaffolds, debris containers or material staging. Access may be a project-level cost rather than a square-foot rate, so preserve it as an explicit line instead of multiplying every surface by an unexplained premium.

Build one interface responsibility matrix

Siding cost depends on entered local scope
The siding budget prices measured field material, installation, removal and fixed work only where the visitor enters current rates. It cannot inspect sheathing, verify the drainage plane, quantify concealed rot or infer accessory scope from field square footage.
Window count does not establish installation quality
An opening-based budget cannot choose insert versus full-frame replacement, confirm flashing continuity, identify structural or water damage, determine safety glazing or egress, or promise energy savings. Those decisions belong to the scheduled product, site conditions and documented installation.
Exterior coating quantity is not a surface diagnosis
Paintable area, coats and coverage estimate finish gallons. They do not identify moisture, adhesion, incompatible coatings, lead, unsafe access or the preparation required for a durable result. The local quote must state inspection, preparation, repair and regulated-work assumptions.
Gutter footage does not size drainage capacity
Horizontal and downspout footage support a local-cost worksheet, but contributing roof area, design rainfall, valleys, slope, outlets, snow and discharge constraints control capacity and layout. Obtain project-specific drainage review before finalizing product size or outlet locations.
