What does the drywall calculator calculate?

Multiply total wall length by height, subtract unboarded openings, add any ceiling area, and increase the result for cuts and damage. Divide by the selected sheet’s face area and round up. Sheet orientation, seam layout, fire assemblies, and local code still require project-specific planning.

Drywall sheet formula

Sheets = ceiling(((total wall length × height − openings) + ceiling area) × allowance ÷ sheet area)

All covered faces become net board area. Cutting allowance accounts for panel layout and damage, while final division by sheet face area converts coverage into whole panels.

How to measure for an accurate estimate

  1. Add the lengths of all wall faces receiving board, including returns and short partitions.
  2. Measure opening area directly when large doors, windows, or pass-throughs will not receive panels.
  3. Measure ceilings separately, including soffits or dropped sections, and avoid counting the floor footprint twice.
  4. Choose sheet dimensions that suit framing, access, lifting limits, seam placement, and local assembly requirements.

Before you purchase material

  • Match board type and thickness to the approved wall, ceiling, moisture, impact, or fire-rated assembly.
  • Longer sheets may reduce seams but are heavier and may not fit stairs, hallways, or elevators.
  • Store panels flat, dry, supported, and protected from weather according to manufacturer guidance.
  • Plan compound, tape, corner bead, fasteners, backing, and lift equipment separately from panel count.

Common questions

How many square feet are in a drywall sheet?

A 4-by-8-foot sheet has 32 square feet, a 4-by-10 has 40, and a 4-by-12 has 48. Actual product dimensions and edge details should be confirmed, and larger sheets may reduce seams while increasing handling difficulty.

How much extra drywall should I buy?

About 10% is a practical planning allowance for a straightforward room. Small walls, many openings, angled ceilings, complicated cuts, or fragile handling can require more. A panel layout based on stud and joist locations produces the best final count.

Should I subtract windows and doors from drywall?

Subtract large openings when doing so will not eliminate useful offcuts needed around them. Small openings still require full panels across framing and create cuts, so aggressively subtracting every opening can underestimate sheets. Review a real panel layout.

Can regular drywall be used in every room?

No. Moisture exposure, fire resistance, ceiling framing, sound control, impact, and tile backing can require specific panels and complete tested assemblies. Use approved construction documents, local code, and each manufacturer’s installation instructions for product selection.
