Gravel Driveway Calculator — Layers, Yards and Tons
Size a single combined driveway aggregate order from compacted dimensions, then account separately for material compaction and construction waste.
What does the gravel driveway calculator calculate?
A driveway’s finished volume equals length times width times compacted depth. Divide cubic feet by 27, then increase that volume for compaction and waste before converting to tons. A 4-inch refresh differs from a full multi-layer build, so calculate each aggregate layer separately when products differ.
Compacted driveway gravel formula
Finished dimensions establish the compacted target. The compaction allowance converts that target to loose delivered volume, while waste covers spreading and handling losses.
How to measure for an accurate estimate
- Measure the driven surface, including parking pads and turnarounds, but exclude shoulders unless they receive aggregate.
- Take several width readings along tapered drives and divide the drive into average-width sections.
- Use the compacted finished depth for each layer, not the loose depth before rolling.
- Calculate base, intermediate, and surface courses separately when their stone or density differs.
Two-car gravel driveway refresh
A 50 ft by 12 ft drive needs 4 in compacted depth, 15% compaction allowance, 5% waste, and 1.45 tons/yd³.
The finished volume is 7.41 yd³; the loose order is 8.94 yd³, or approximately 12.96 tons. Before you purchase material
- Request aggregate gradation suited to local driveway construction rather than choosing only by stone size.
- Confirm the truck’s payload so the estimate can be converted into practical delivery loads.
- Schedule enough time to spread and compact each lift before the next delivery arrives.
- Do not substitute a waste percentage for correcting drainage, weak subgrade, or insufficient base depth.
Common questions
How deep should gravel be for a driveway?
Depth depends on soil, drainage, climate, vehicle loading, and whether an existing base remains. A light resurfacing may add only a few inches, while new construction commonly uses multiple thicker courses. Obtain local pavement guidance before treating a quantity estimate as a design.
Why does the calculator add a compaction allowance?
Delivered aggregate contains voids in a loose pile. Rolling and vibration rearrange particles, reducing volume while increasing density. The allowance estimates how much loose material is needed to produce the desired finished depth; supplier experience with the selected gradation is the best input.
Can I calculate a circular driveway?
Yes, divide it into manageable shapes. Estimate the annular drive area from the outer-circle area minus the inner-circle area, then use that square footage with the desired depth. Add rectangular entrances separately and retain an allowance for curved-edge grading.
How many tons fit in a gravel delivery truck?
Payload varies by truck configuration, road restrictions, material density, and local law. Do not assume a universal load size. Give the supplier the calculator’s total tons and delivery conditions; the dispatcher can divide it into legal loads and identify access requirements.
