What does the countertop calculator calculate?

Multiply total non-overlapping run length by countertop depth, add separately measured islands or peninsulas, and subtract duplicated corner overlap. Add backsplash area, then apply a planning allowance. The result estimates square footage, not slab count; final seam placement and slab layout belong to the fabricator.

Countertop and backsplash square footage

Planning area = {[(run length × depth ÷ 12) + additional area − corner overlap] + (backsplash length × height ÷ 12)} × allowance factor

Dividing inch depth by 12 converts each linear-foot run into square feet. Additional tops are added directly, duplicated corner area is removed once, and backsplash area is calculated separately before the chosen planning allowance.

How to measure for an accurate estimate

  1. Sketch each cabinet run, island, peninsula, raised bar, and backsplash as a separate labeled rectangle.
  2. Measure planned finished edges rather than relying only on cabinet catalog dimensions or an old countertop.
  3. Where two full-depth runs overlap at a corner, calculate that duplicated rectangle once and enter it as overlap.
  4. Keep sink and cooktop openings in the footprint because surrounding material still must come from a full piece.

Counter runs with an island and backsplash

Eighteen linear feet of 25.5-inch-deep tops, a 12-square-foot island, and a 12-by-0.333-foot backsplash use 10% allowance with no duplicated overlap.

The tops total 50.25 square feet, the backsplash adds 4 square feet, and the planning quantity is about 59.7 square feet.

Before you purchase material

  • Use square footage for early budgeting, then obtain a professional template and slab layout before fabrication.
  • Discuss seam locations, grain or vein direction, edge buildup, overhang support, cutouts, and appliance clearances.
  • Confirm whether a quote includes the backsplash, sink mounting, faucet holes, delivery, removal, and plumbing reconnection.
  • Reserve matching material for repairs only when the fabricator confirms it can be stored and handled safely.

Common questions

How do I calculate countertop square footage?

Measure each non-overlapping section’s length and depth, convert both to feet, and multiply them. Add every section and backsplash. For standard-depth runs, this calculator accepts combined linear feet and depth in inches, then performs the conversion.

Should I subtract a sink or cooktop cutout?

Usually no when planning purchased material. The surrounding countertop must be fabricated from an intact piece before the opening is cut, and the removed center rarely offsets another required section. Ask the fabricator how cutouts affect pricing.

Why can slab quantity differ from square footage?

Rectangular slabs cannot always be packed with countertop pieces efficiently. Vein direction, defects, seam limits, edge profiles, sink placement, and transport dimensions create layout constraints. A project with modest square footage can therefore require an additional slab.

How much countertop material allowance should I add?

Ten percent is useful for an early sheet-material estimate, but slab projects should use the fabricator’s actual layout rather than a flat percentage. Irregular rooms, directional patterns, large islands, waterfall edges, and limited seam locations can require substantially more.
