What does the baluster spacing calculator calculate?

For each clear rail opening, choose the smallest whole baluster count whose equal end and interior gaps do not exceed the entered limit. The calculator reports pieces per opening, total pieces, and resulting gap. Confirm local guard rules, stair exceptions, post placement, fasteners, and product instructions before construction.

Minimum equal baluster layout

Balusters per opening = ceiling((clear span − maximum gap) ÷ (baluster width + maximum gap)); actual gap = (span − baluster count × width) ÷ (count + 1)

There is one more gap than balusters because the layout includes both end gaps. Rounding the required baluster count upward makes every equal gap no larger than the entered limit, while the second formula reports the buildable clear gap.

How to measure for an accurate estimate

  1. Measure the finished clear distance between post faces at the rail location after posts are plumb and securely installed.
  2. Measure actual baluster width with the same orientation used in the guard; nominal lumber or profile names may differ.
  3. Create separate calculations for openings with different widths instead of multiplying one layout across unequal bays.
  4. Mark baluster centerlines from the calculated clear gap and actual width, then verify both end gaps before fastening.

One finished opening measures 72 inches between posts, each baluster is 1.5 inches wide, and the approved maximum clear gap is 4 inches.

Thirteen balusters create fourteen equal gaps of 3.75 inches, staying within the entered limit.

Before you purchase material

  • Use the approved railing system’s posts, rails, balusters, connectors, fasteners, and attachment schedule as a compatible assembly.
  • Buy enough pieces for damage and cutting only after every unique rail opening and stair flight has its own layout.
  • Check whether surface-mounted balusters, routed rails, connectors, or stair angles change the effective width used in spacing.
  • Have guards and handrails designed and inspected under the locally adopted code; a spacing result alone does not establish safety.

Common questions

Why are there more gaps than balusters?

An evenly centered layout includes one gap at each post plus the gaps between adjacent balusters. Thirteen balusters therefore create fourteen clear spaces. Omitting an end gap from the arithmetic makes the finished layout uneven or can produce an opening larger than intended.

Is four inches always the legal baluster spacing?

No. Four inches is a familiar model-code opening limitation for many residential guards, but adopted editions, amendments, stair locations, occupancies, products, and approved designs can differ. Enter the requirement confirmed for the project and treat the calculator as layout help, not code approval.

Can I use nominal baluster width?

Use the actual finished width presented to the opening. Nominal lumber dimensions, turned profiles, metal shapes, sleeves, and connectors can differ from their product names. Measuring a sample in installation orientation produces a more reliable equal-gap layout and material count.

How do I handle several unequal railing openings?

Calculate each distinct clear span separately. Reusing one count across unequal openings changes the gaps and may exceed the selected limit. A contractor can group only openings that truly share the same finished width, baluster profile, post faces, and approved gap requirement.
