What does the asphalt calculator calculate?

Multiply paved area by compacted thickness to find compacted cubic feet, then multiply by the selected mix density and convert pounds to short tons. This calculator defaults to 145 pounds per cubic foot, an estimating value; the asphalt producer’s job-mix density and final lift thickness should control the order.

Asphalt tonnage formula

Short tons = length (ft) × width (ft) × compacted depth (in) ÷ 12 × density (lb/ft³) × (1 + allowance ÷ 100) ÷ 2,000.

Length and width establish paved square feet, while dividing depth by 12 converts inches to feet. Multiplying compacted volume by the selected job-mix density produces pounds; the allowance is applied before converting 2,000 pounds into one U.S. short ton.

How to measure for an accurate estimate

  1. Measure the actual paved limits after curves, flares, aprons, and excluded structures are marked.
  2. Divide tapered or irregular paving into smaller rectangles, calculate each section, and add their weights.
  3. Use total compacted thickness; calculate surface and base asphalt courses separately when their mixes or densities differ.
  4. Request the producer’s compacted job-mix density instead of relying on the 145 lb/ft³ planning default.

A 50 ft by 12 ft driveway receives 2.5 in of compacted asphalt at 145 lb/ft³, with a 5% ordering allowance.

The compacted volume is 125 ft³, or 4.63 yd³; including the allowance produces approximately 19,031 lb, equal to 9.52 short tons.

Before you purchase material

  • Ask the paving contractor to confirm pavement section, lift thickness, base preparation, and drainage for local loads and climate.
  • Coordinate plant distance, truck capacity, placement rate, temperature window, and minimum order before scheduling delivery.
  • Keep asphalt waste separate from aggregate-base quantities because the materials use different densities and placement rules.
  • Use the final producer ticket weights to reconcile actual tonnage rather than treating a dimensional estimate as delivered weight.

Common questions

How many square feet does one ton of asphalt cover?

At 145 lb/ft³, one short ton covers about 66 square feet at 2.5 inches compacted or 55 square feet at 3 inches. Actual coverage changes with mix density, thickness variation, surface irregularity, and material retained in equipment.

Why does asphalt density matter in a tonnage estimate?

Asphalt is purchased by weight, but project dimensions create volume. Density connects those quantities. Aggregate type, mix design, and compaction alter pounds per cubic foot, so a producer’s job-mix value gives a better estimate than a universal conversion.

Should I enter loose or compacted asphalt thickness?

Enter the specified compacted thickness because the density input also represents compacted material. Loose material behind the paver occupies more volume. The paving contractor should select lift thicknesses and determine how much loose depth is required to achieve them.

Does this asphalt calculator include the driveway base?

No. It estimates asphalt mixture only. Aggregate base, excavation, geotextile, tack coat, curbs, drainage, and removed pavement require separate quantities. A suitable pavement section depends on subgrade, water, climate, vehicle loading, and local construction requirements.
