What does the sand calculator calculate?

Multiply area by sand depth to get cubic feet, then divide by 27 for cubic yards and add waste. Weight depends on loose bulk density, while bag count depends on the labeled bag weight. Moisture, grading, compaction, and the intended application can change how much sand the project actually consumes.

Sand volume, weight, and bag formula

Order yd³ = length × width × depth ÷ 12 ÷ 27 × (1 + waste ÷ 100); tons = yd³ × density; bags = ceiling(tons × 2,000 ÷ bag weight).

The dimensional calculation produces loose volume after waste. Supplier density converts that volume into estimated short tons, and multiplying by 2,000 converts tons to pounds. Dividing by labeled bag weight and rounding up produces a purchasable whole-bag count.

How to measure for an accurate estimate

  1. Measure inside curbs, forms, or edging and divide curved or L-shaped spaces into simpler sections.
  2. Take several depth readings where the base varies, then use a defensible average rather than the deepest point.
  3. Measure finished sand depth after any excavation, base aggregate, liner, or drainage layer is accounted for.
  4. Confirm whether the supplier’s density represents loose, damp, or compacted sand before entering it.

Before you purchase material

  • Choose sand by intended use and specification; play, masonry, concrete, bedding, joint, and filter sands are not interchangeable.
  • Compare bulk delivery with bags after including delivery fees, minimum loads, handling, and storage space.
  • Keep sand dry and contained when practical because rain changes weight and can make spreading or mixing inconsistent.
  • Follow the paver, mortar, concrete, playground, or equipment manufacturer’s gradation and depth requirements.

Common questions

How much area does one cubic yard of sand cover?

One cubic yard covers about 324 square feet at 1 inch deep, 162 square feet at 2 inches, 108 square feet at 3 inches, or 81 square feet at 4 inches before waste, settlement, or an uneven base.

How much does a cubic yard of sand weigh?

This calculator defaults to 1.4 short tons per loose cubic yard, but sand type, particle grading, moisture, and packing change weight. Obtain the supplier’s conversion when delivery limits, price, or structural loading depends on tonnage.

Which type of sand should I buy?

Match the product to the application specification. Concrete, masonry, paver bedding, joint filling, play areas, pool filters, and drainage can require different grading or cleanliness. Confirm the project-system manufacturer’s instructions instead of selecting sand by price alone.

Does sand compact after installation?

Yes, many sands settle or densify under moisture, vibration, and traffic, but the amount varies widely. Enter finished depth and ask the supplier or project designer for a loose-to-compacted allowance when the layer must meet a specified elevation or density.
