What does the TV size calculator calculate?

Enter viewing distance, target horizontal viewing angle, and a planned TV diagonal. The calculator converts the target angle into a 16:9 screen diagonal, then reverses the same geometry to show the distance for the planned TV. It also reports that TV’s screen width, height, and actual angle.

16:9 screen size and viewing distance formulas

Target screen width = 2 × viewing distance × tan(target angle ÷ 2); target diagonal = screen width × √337 ÷ 16. Distance for a planned TV = [planned diagonal × 16 ÷ √337] ÷ [2 × tan(target angle ÷ 2)].

A centered screen, the viewer, and the two screen edges form two right triangles. Trigonometry converts the selected horizontal angle and eye-to-screen distance into screen width. The fixed 16:9 relationship converts width to diagonal, and reversing the same equation gives the comparison distance for a planned TV.

How to measure for an accurate estimate

  1. Sit in the primary viewing position and measure horizontally from eye location to the plane where the front of the screen will sit.
  2. Choose a horizontal viewing-angle target based on the household’s comfort, typical content, room use, and preference; do not treat the default as a universal rule.
  3. Enter the advertised screen diagonal for a TV you are considering, then compare its calculated angle and same-angle distance with the room.
  4. Measure the product’s complete cabinet, feet or stand, bracket pattern, and connector clearance from the model-specific dimension drawing before purchase.

The angle-based target is about 66.4 inches diagonal and 57.9 inches wide. A 65-inch TV is about 56.7 by 31.9 inches, spans roughly 29.4 degrees from that seat, and matches 30 degrees at about 8.81 feet.

Before you purchase material

  • Outline the calculated screen width and height with low-tack tape, then watch from every regular seat before committing to the diagonal.
  • Compare native resolution, reflection handling, brightness, off-axis performance, accessibility needs, and the resolution of content you actually watch instead of choosing by size alone.
  • Check stand width and depth or use a manufacturer-approved wall bracket; identify framing, wiring, ventilation clearances, and outlet locations before installation.
  • Mount or anchor the television and supporting furniture according to manufacturer instructions and current CPSC tip-over guidance, especially where children may be present.

Common questions

What TV size is right for a nine-foot viewing distance?

There is no single size that fits every viewer or source. With this calculator’s 30-degree default, nine feet corresponds to about 66.4 inches diagonal for a 16:9 screen. Try nearby marketed sizes with taped outlines, then consider comfort, resolution, reflections, and room circulation.

Does the calculator recommend a minimum viewing distance?

No. It converts a viewing angle you select into screen size and reverses that geometry for comparison. Manufacturer advice varies with display resolution, content, environment, and viewer preference. Use model-specific guidance and choose a distance that remains comfortable for everyone who regularly watches.

Why is actual TV width smaller than its advertised size?

Television size is normally the diagonal of the image area, not its horizontal width. For a 16:9 screen, width equals diagonal multiplied by 16 divided by the square root of 337. Bezels, stands, speakers, and connector clearances add separate product dimensions.

Can I use this result for a projector screen?

The 16:9 viewing-angle geometry also describes a 16:9 projected image, but it does not size a projector. Throw ratio, lens shift, brightness, ambient light, screen gain, mounting range, ventilation, and manufacturer image-size limits must all be checked separately for the selected equipment.
