Enter finished room length and width plus the exposed-floor border you want on every side. The calculator subtracts twice that border from both room dimensions, producing the largest centered rectangular rug footprint and its area. Tape out the result before buying because furniture placement may require a smaller or differently oriented rug.
Centered room-fit rug formulas
A centered rectangle has the same exposed-floor border at both ends of each dimension, so the border is subtracted twice from room length and twice from room width. Multiplying the remaining positive dimensions gives rug area; dividing by room area provides a useful scale comparison.
How to measure for an accurate estimate
- Measure finished floor length and width at multiple locations, using the usable rectangle rather than assuming walls are square or parallel.
- Mark doors, floor registers, hearths, built-ins, transitions, and required walking paths that may reduce the rug’s practical footprint.
- Choose the exposed-floor border, subtracting it on all four sides, then outline the calculated rug dimensions with painter’s tape.
- Place furniture or paper templates on the outline and test seating, chair pullout, door movement, vacuum access, and daily circulation before ordering.

Should a living-room rug go under the sofa?
It can sit under all seating legs, only the front legs, or within a seating group, depending on rug size and room layout. Choose one consistent relationship across the main furniture pieces. How much floor should show around an area rug?

Does a rug pad change the rug size I should buy?
