What does the permeable paver calculator calculate?

Divide paved area by the manufacturer’s installed module coverage, including the designed joint or open-cell spacing, then add cutting waste and round up. Multiply project area by bedding and base depths for aggregate volume. Infiltration, overflow, subgrade, traffic loads, edge restraint, and local stormwater rules still govern design.

Permeable paver and aggregate formulas

Pavers = paved area ÷ installed module coverage area × (1 + waste %); layer yd³ = paved area × (layer depth ÷ 12) ÷ 27 × (1 + allowance %).

Installed module pitch includes the unit plus its assigned joint or open-cell spacing, so the two pitch dimensions produce consistent coverage area. Layer depths convert to feet, then cubic-foot volumes convert to cubic yards.

How to measure for an accurate estimate

  1. Measure the finished permeable surface inside edge restraints and divide curved or irregular plans into simple shapes.
  2. Use the manufacturer’s published installed module coverage or pitch, including the designed joint or open-cell spacing.
  3. Enter compacted layer depths from the site-specific section, not loose delivery depth or a generic online detail.
  4. Map slopes, low points, utilities, foundations, trees, and the intended overflow route before fixing the pavement footprint.

Common questions

How deep should a permeable paver base be?

Base depth depends on subgrade infiltration, frost, rainfall storage, drainage configuration, traffic loading, aggregate properties, and local criteria. Eight inches is only an editable example, not a design recommendation. Obtain a site-specific pavement section before using the aggregate quantity for purchasing.

Do permeable pavers need special gravel?

Yes, permeable systems generally use clean, open-graded aggregates selected to provide void storage, drainage, stability, and compatible joints. Conventional dense-graded base with fines can block infiltration. Follow the paver system specification and locally accepted gradations rather than substituting similar-looking stone.

How much waste should I add for permeable pavers?

A simple rectangular field may need a modest allowance, while curves, borders, diagonal patterns, breakage, and color blending increase cuts and waste. Check pallet coverage and pattern-specific manufacturer guidance. Keep a small quantity of matching units for future repairs without inflating aggregate quantities unnecessarily.

Do permeable pavers prevent all stormwater runoff?

No. Performance depends on rainfall intensity, available reservoir storage, soil infiltration, maintenance, sediment loading, slope, and any underdrain or overflow. Large or repeated storms can exceed capacity. The system needs a safe overflow path and periodic surface maintenance to preserve infiltration.
