What does the dehumidifier size calculator calculate?

Enter floor area, choose the ENERGY STAR dampness condition that best matches the untreated space, and optionally add a documented capacity adjustment. The result is a portable-dehumidifier pints-per-day range, not an exact load calculation. Temperature, air leakage, drainage, moisture sources, layout, and whole-home ducting can change appropriate equipment.

ENERGY STAR capacity-band lookup

Capacity band = ENERGY STAR table lookup by floor-area column and untreated dampness level; adjusted band = source band × (1 + optional added-capacity %).

The current ENERGY STAR table labels small-medium spaces below 2,000 square feet and large spaces above 2,000; this lookup keeps exactly 2,000 in the lower band. It groups observed conditions into three levels. The optional adjustment is not an EPA requirement, and large-space values remain open-ended because the source gives only a minimum.

How to measure for an accurate estimate

  1. Measure the connected floor area the portable unit will actually serve; closed doors and separated rooms may require a different layout.
  2. Observe untreated conditions and measured relative humidity before selecting level 1, 2, or 3 from the field’s ENERGY STAR-based descriptions.
  3. Record the typical lowest operating temperature because cool basements can reduce performance and may require a low-temperature-rated model.
  4. Identify bulk water, plumbing leaks, seepage, dryer exhaust, standing water, and drainage problems before treating dehumidification as the solution.

What do pints per day mean on a dehumidifier?

Pints per day is the amount of water a unit removes over twenty-four hours under specified test conditions. It is a comparative rated capacity, not a promise for every basement. Actual removal changes with temperature, humidity, airflow, cycling, frost control, and moisture entering the space.

How do I choose the dampness level?

Use level 1 for intermittent mustiness or roughly 50–75% untreated relative humidity, level 2 for persistent dampness or damp spots, and level 3 for sweating surfaces, seepage, or high moisture loads. Measure humidity and assess conditions before operation rather than guessing from a dried space.

Why does temperature matter when sizing a dehumidifier?

Cool air holds less moisture, and frost can form on refrigerated coils. ENERGY STAR advises considering a product specified for lower temperatures when the space typically drops below 65°F. Check each model’s operating range and defrost controls instead of assuming its rated capacity applies unchanged.

Will a larger dehumidifier solve seepage or mold?

No. Dehumidification can remove airborne moisture but does not repair plumbing leaks, foundation seepage, poor grading, unsafe dryer venting, or contaminated materials. Correct water sources promptly and obtain qualified remediation or building guidance when mold, flooding, structural damage, or persistent high humidity is present.
