For an equal board-and-batten layout, choose a board count or set the count to zero and enter a desired clear gap. The calculator fits whole boards across the wall, places the first and last boards at the edges, and reports the resulting gap, center spacing, and left-edge layout marks.
Equal board-and-batten spacing formula
The layout reserves the combined width of all boards, then divides the remaining wall width equally among the spaces between them. With two or more boards, the first and last boards align to the outside edges. When count is zero, the desired gap is used to choose the nearest feasible whole-board count.
How to measure for an accurate estimate
- Measure the finished wall width at the top, middle, and bottom, then plan from the controlling dimension or establish a square reference line.
- Measure actual board face width rather than relying on a nominal product name, especially for milled trim or site-ripped material.
- Enter a board count when visual alignment controls; otherwise enter zero and use the desired clear gap to generate the nearest whole-board fit.
- Transfer every left-edge mark from one consistent reference edge, and dry-layout several boards before fastening the full wall.
Twelve-foot feature wall using a desired gap
A 12-foot-wide uninterrupted wall uses boards with an actual 2.5-inch face. The desired board count is left at zero, and the preferred clear gap is 16 inches.

Common questions
Should board-and-batten spacing be measured edge to edge or on center?
Either convention works when it is applied consistently, but they describe different dimensions. This calculator reports both the clear edge-to-edge gap and on-center spacing. Its placement list measures from the left wall edge to each board’s left edge, reducing conversion mistakes during layout.
Why does entering zero boards use the desired gap?
The numeric form uses zero as a transparent switch between two methods. A positive whole-board count controls the layout directly. Zero tells the calculator to compare wall width, actual board width, and desired clear gap, then select the nearest feasible whole-board count.
What happens if the requested boards cannot fit?
The calculator limits the result to the maximum number of whole boards that physically fit across the entered wall width. It then reports the resulting equal gap and a warning. Consider narrower boards or fewer boards rather than overlapping material or using a negative gap.
How should I handle windows, doors, and corners?
Treat interrupted areas as separate layout sections and decide which visual lines should continue across openings. Measure casing, corner boards, reveals, and finished boundaries first. Dry-layout the pattern because a mathematically equal result may still need adjustment to avoid awkward narrow pieces or conflicts.
