Baseboard needed equals the room perimeter minus door openings. This calculator applies your cutting and defect allowance to that net run, then rounds up to whole stock pieces at the entered length. It also shows purchased footage and nominal surplus, making the result more practical than a perimeter-only estimate.
Baseboard perimeter and stock-piece formulas
A rectangular room has two long walls and two short walls. Openings without baseboard are removed before the allowance is applied. The adjusted footage is divided by the selected purchasable stock length and rounded up, because suppliers sell whole pieces. Purchased footage can exceed both the net run and percentage-adjusted target.
How to measure for an accurate estimate
- Measure finished wall lengths at baseboard height, or confirm the room is rectangular before using only length and width.
- Measure the combined finished width of every doorway or opening where baseboard stops; use an average only when openings truly match.
- Check the exact in-stock piece length, because advertised profiles may be sold in random lengths or several fixed lengths.
- Sketch opening positions and wall segments before cutting so the pooled quantity becomes a workable joint and splice plan.
Baseboard for a fourteen-by-twelve-foot room
A rectangular room measures 14 feet by 12 feet and has two three-foot door openings. The chosen baseboard comes in 16-foot pieces, and the project uses a 10% cutting and defect allowance.

- Select a stock length that reduces visible scarf joints on long walls while still fitting transport routes, elevators, stairways, and the installation room.
- Increase the allowance for stain-grade matching, damaged ends, complex corners, bowed stock, or rooms with many short interrupted segments.
- Buy matching profile, thickness, species, and batch where possible, and include separately measured shoe molding, plinth blocks, returns, and special transitions.
- Acclimate and finish material as its manufacturer directs, then verify wall moisture, fastening points, and concealed utilities before installation.
Common questions
How do I calculate baseboard for an irregular room?
Measure each straight wall segment where baseboard will actually run, add those lengths, and subtract openings. The rectangular inputs are best for four-wall rooms. For irregular spaces, use the linear-feet calculator first, then divide its total plus allowance by your stock length.
Should I subtract door widths from baseboard length?
Subtract finished openings only where baseboard stops completely. Do not subtract openings that receive baseboard beneath them, and measure between the actual termination points. Door casing, plinth blocks, returns, and transition details may change the net baseboard run around each opening.
Why are purchased feet higher than the waste-adjusted run?
The calculator rounds the adjusted run up to whole stock pieces. That final rounding creates additional nominal surplus beyond the percentage allowance. Some surplus becomes unusable offcuts, so purchased footage should not be treated as guaranteed reusable material after the cut plan.
Does this baseboard estimate include corner and scarf joints?
The allowance can cover some joint cuts, but the result does not place them. Inside and outside corners, long-wall scarf joints, returns, and opening locations affect usable piece lengths. Make a wall-by-wall cut plan and confirm profile orientation before buying or cutting stock.
