Enter the battery energy added per session, charger power, charging efficiency, electricity rate, and sessions per month. The calculator estimates wall energy, charging time, cost per session, and monthly charging cost. Results are planning estimates because vehicles may taper power and utilities may use time-based rates or added fees.
EV session energy, time, and cost
Charging efficiency converts desired battery energy into metered wall energy. Dividing that wall energy by charger power gives an idealized session duration, while multiplying by the applicable electricity rate gives cost. Monthly totals repeat the same assumed session; they do not predict driving range, annual use, or equipment cost.
How to measure for an accurate estimate
- Estimate energy added from the vehicle’s trip or charging history instead of entering full battery capacity for every session.
- Check both the charging equipment output and the vehicle’s onboard AC charging limit, then enter the lower available power.
- Read the utility tariff for the actual charging hours and use the marginal energy rate, including time-of-use pricing when applicable.
- Use several representative sessions when seasonal temperature or daily driving changes the amount of energy added.

Common questions
Why is wall energy higher than energy added to the battery?
Charging equipment, cables, power electronics, battery conditioning, and the battery itself lose some energy as heat. Dividing battery energy added by the entered efficiency estimates what the utility meter supplies. Actual loss varies by vehicle, power level, temperature, and charging state.
Why can actual EV charging take longer than this estimate?
The calculation assumes steady charging at the entered power. A vehicle may accept less power than the charger offers, reduce power near a high state of charge, warm or cool its battery, pause for scheduled charging, or share available power with other equipment.
Which electricity rate should I enter for home charging?
Use the marginal per-kWh price that applies during expected charging hours, not simply the total bill divided by usage when fixed charges dominate. For time-of-use service, calculate typical off-peak and peak sessions separately and compare them with the utility’s current tariff.
Does this calculator include charger purchase and installation costs?
No. It estimates session energy, session time, and monthly electricity cost only. Equipment, permits, panel or service changes, professional labor, taxes, incentives, demand charges, and subscription fees are site-specific and should be evaluated through current written quotes and utility information.
