Raceway fill from conductor cross-sectional area
The calculation treats each entered conductor as a circle using its finished outside diameter, totals those areas, and divides by the verified internal raceway area. Actual code work uses tabulated raceway and conductor areas, different percentage limits for different arrangements, and additional installation rules that this geometry check does not evaluate.
How to measure for an accurate estimate
- Identify the exact raceway material, schedule, and trade size, then copy its internal area from the locally adopted NEC table or current manufacturer documentation.
- Identify every conductor and cable in the raceway; use finished insulated dimensions rather than nominal copper or aluminum diameter.
- Run separate geometry checks when conductor sizes differ, then total the individual tabulated areas instead of averaging their diameters.
- Confirm whether the raceway is a complete system, a protective sleeve, a nipple, or another condition because the applicable rules can differ.

Should I use bare conductor diameter?
No. Raceway fill concerns the space occupied by the finished insulated conductor or cable assembly. Insulation type and product construction change outside dimensions, so use the tabulated area or outside diameter for the exact listed product rather than bare metal size.
Does a passing fill percentage prove the wire pull is safe?
No. A raceway can meet an area limit while still presenting excessive pulling tension, sidewall pressure, bend difficulty, jamming risk, heat, or adjustment concerns. Those conditions require product data, route details, code rules, suitable equipment, and qualified design judgment.
Can this calculator combine several conductor sizes?
The interface models identical round conductors. For mixed sizes, calculate or obtain each product's listed cross-sectional area, multiply each area by its count, and total the groups. A qualified electrician should verify that total against the correct raceway and code tables.
